when we left earth

I'm a sucker for deserts. Having never been to one, I think I lucked out here. All the desolation of a desert minus the heat. Taken at about 9,300 feet, this photo isn't photoshopped - the rocks were actually Mars-red. The area was littered with painfully scenic craters and overlooks into the island of Maui. At this altitude, nothing grows. When you sprint back and forth (trying to beat the 10 second time on the camera), you realize why: after one or two quick sprints, you suddenly find yourself fatigued and trying to catch your breath.

So surely the two of you still following this blog were confused by the sudden change of environment. From meters below the earth to kilometers above it, the contrast was a welcome change to the damp darkness of the underground. The following set of pictures are from Maui's Haleakala - a 10,000 foot potentially active shield volcano-turned-tourist-attraction that makes up a majority of Maui's southwest. A little known back road allows hikers and expert mountain bikers to descend 7,000 feet over 16 miles (and through nearly every environment imaginable), and I, having never mountain biked before, attempted just that. Hope you enjoy the show, because I sure enjoyed the ride.
